유래
‘an X short of a Y’라는 형식으로 많은 관용구가 있지만 모두 같은 의미로 멍청하게 말하는 사람을 뜻한다. ‘short of’가 모욕적인 말로 쓰인 것은 19세기 중반 Australia와 New Zealand로 1852년 Colonel Godfrey Mundy의 Our Antipodes가 대표적인 예다.
"The climate is productive of chronic diseases rather than acute ones. Let no man having, in colonial phrase, 'a shingle short' try this country. He will pass his days in Tarban Creek Asylum."
‘shingles’는 나무널이지만 'a few slates missing', 'a screw loose' 등과 같은 많은 이러한 표현은 머리 속에서 무엇인가가 사라지거나 없어지는 것을 의미하였다.
‘A sandwich short of a picnic’은 비교적 최신에 나온 단어로 처음 인용된 것은 1987년 12월 BBC의 Lenny Henry Christmas Special에서였다. 이 쇼에서 Henry는 Kim Fuller와 다른 사람들이 쓴 I'm Mad를 패러디 노래와 반복된 춤으로 공연하였는데 Michael Jackson의 1983년 히트 곡 Bad를 흉내낸 것으로 그는 정신이상자에게 입히는 구속복을 입고 'I'm mad, I'm mad'라는 노래를 반복해서 불렀고 뒤의 코러스가 다음과 같이 노래 하였다.
He's mad, mad, one brick short of a load
He's mad, mad, one sandwich short of a picnic
이 표현의 ‘two sandwiches short of a picnic’ 버전은 1987년 3월 Walk Like A man이라는 영화에 나온다. Christopher Lloyd가 표현한 캐릭터가 이 어구를 말하는데 Howie Mandell이 분한 캐릭터를 지칭할 때 사용한 것이다.
