‘bated’와 ‘baited’ 중에서 어떤 것이 맞나? 미끼를 매단 바늘(baited hooks)이나 미끼를 넣은 덫(baited traps)은 있어 ‘baited’는 알지만 대체 ‘bated’는 무엇인가? ‘bated’는 다른 곳에서 들어보지 못했다면 실제적으로 사용되는 단어가 아닌 것처럼 들린다. 그렇다면 'baited breath'라는 문구는 의미가 없게 들리기도 한다.
동시대의 책에서는 이에 대한 안내가 거의 없다. 구글링을 해보면 'bated breath'를 대신해 'baited breath'로 쓰인 내용도 거의 같은 수로 조회된다. 그런데 베스트셀러의 하나인 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban(확실히 정확하게 교정을 받던 책)에 보면 다음과 같은 내용이 등장한다.
"The whole common room listened with baited breath."
이런 경우 자주 그렇지만 이번에도 셰익스피어의 작품에서 이 내용을 볼 수가 있다. 최초의 기록은 1596년 Merchant of Venice로 다음과 같다.
What should I say to you? Should I not say
'Hath a dog money? is it possible
A cur can lend three thousand ducats?' Or
Shall I bend low and in a bondman's key,
With bated breath and whispering humbleness, Say this;
'Fair sir, you spit on me on Wednesday last;

'bated'는 ‘줄이다, 약화시키다’라는 뜻을 가진 ‘abated’의 줄임말로 'abated breath'가 완벽한 문구라고 할 수 있는데 이 관용구가 시작된 곳에서 그렇게 쓰여있다.
1933년 Geoffrey Taylor는 그의 짧은 시 Cruel, Clever Cat에서 코믹한 효과를 위해 다음과 같이 단어의 스펠링을 혼란스럽게 사용한 것이다.
Sally, having swallowed cheese
Directs down holes the scented breeze
Enticing thus with baited breath
Nice mice to an untimely death.
