유래:
글자 뜻 그대로 높은 곳에서 떨어진 말 이외에 ‘dead horse’의 원래 의미는 사전에 임금을 받은 (그리고 아마도 그 돈을 이미 다 써버린) 사람이 해야 할 일을 뜻한다. 이런 의미의 표현은 17세기로 거슬러 올라가는데 1638년에 초연되고 1640년에 인쇄된 Richard Brome의 연극 The Antipodes에 다음과 같이 언급되어 있다.
He cur'd a country gentleman that fell mad
For spending of his land before he sold it;
That is, 'twas sold to pay his debts - all went
That way for a dead horse, as one would say!
현재 우리가 사용하는 'flog a dead horse'라는 관용구의 의미는 완전히 다른 것으로 이것은 완전히 무의미하여 어떠한 생산적인 목적도 달성 할 수 없는 무엇을 뜻한다. 때때로 'beating a dead horse'라고도 사용되는 이 관용구는 Lord Elcho더 더 잘 알려진 Wemyss의 여덟 번째 백작과 March의 여섯 번째 백작인 Francis Wemyss-Charteris Douglas가 관련된 1859년 영국 의회에서 벌어진 논쟁에 등장한다. 이 논쟁이 1858년 Hansard's parliamentary debates, Volume 153에 다음과 같이 기록된 것이다.
If the hon. Member for Birmingham [John Bright] had been present, he would have asked the hon. Gentleman [Lord Elcho] whether he was satisfied with the results of his winter campaign. It was notorious that he was not, and a saying was attributed to him that he found he was "flogging a dead horse."
그런데 Lord Elcho가 이 관용구를 최초로 만든 것인지는 알 수가 없다. 다만 그 이전에 기록된 것은 아직 남아있지 않다.
