유래:
'Cloak and dagger'는 속임수와 사기의 이미지를 떠올린다는 점에서 'smoke and mirrors(교묘한 속임수)'라는 표현과 같은 느낌을 가지고 있다. 18세기 프랑스와 스페인에서는 일반적으로 망토(cloak )를 걸치고 단도(dagger)를 찬 주인공이 등장하는 형태의 드라마가 유행했는데 이를 'de cape et d'épée' 그리고 스페인에서는 'de capa y espada'이라고 불렀다. 그런데 이 둘 다 모두 영어로는 글자 뜻 그대로인 'of cloak and sword'라고 번역된다. 한 쪽 팔에는 망토(cloak)를 보호막으로 두르고 단도(dagger)는 싸우는데 이용하였다. 그런데 18세기 전 이미 영어로 사용된 표현 'cloak and dagger'의 기원으로 보이지는 않는다.
Cloak이 사용되는 다른 예는 배신한 암살자와 같은 방식으로 자신의 정체성을 숨기는 것인데 이 설명이 'cloak and dagger'를 비유적으로 언급된 최초의 기록과 가장 비슷하다. 그 최초의 기록은 1769년 7월 The Derby Mercury에 of "A Speech of a Nobel Earl to a Great Personage"라는 제목으로 실린 다음과 같은 내용이다.
"...and those that endeavour to dissolve it [the Union of Great Britain], carry a dagger under the cloak of patriotism, to stab their country in the heart."
'Noble Earl'이 누구인지는 모르지만 시기를 고려해볼 때 'Great Personage'는 George III라는 것을 추측해 볼 수 있다.
기록으로 남겨진 다른 사례들을 보면 dagger(단도)에 대한 이미지는 cloak(망토) 아래에 감춰진 것으로 나오는데 그 한 예가 1836년 9월 The Morning Post에 실린 다음과 같은 내용이다.
"...carrying a dagger against the Church, under the capacious cloak of economy."
Cloaks and daggers는 모두 1840년대 이전 기록에 언급되어 있지만 누군가가 'cloak and dagger'라는 표현을 영어로 가져왔다고 주장한다면 그는 Charles Dickens라고 할 수 있다. 1841년 Barnaby Rudge에서 Charles Dickens는 무대장치로 cloak and dagger를 사용하는 멜로드라마에 대한 냉소적인 언급을 다음과 같이 한 적이 있다.
...his servant brought in a very small scrap of dirty paper, tightly sealed in two places, on the inside whereof was inscribed in pretty large text these words: 'A friend. Desiring of a conference. Immediate. Private. Burn it when you've read it.'
'Where in the name of the Gunpowder Plot did you pick up this?' said his master.
It was given him by a person then waiting at the door, the man replied.
