유래:
스코틀랜드에서는 ‘muckle’를 더 선호하는 ‘mickel’은 ‘크기가 큰’이란 의미를 가지고 있다. 'many a little (or pickle) makes a mickle' 외에도 영국에서만 지명으로 남아 사용되고 있는 말들이 있는데 'large, steep-sided island'라고 넓게 해석되는 Shetland의 Muckle Flugga와 Domesday Book as Magna Oufra의 'large village on the hill'에 목록으로 올라 있는 Derbyshire의 Mickleover가 그것들이다. ‘over’와 ‘upper’는 그 반대말인 'under', 'lower', 'nether' 혹은 ‘little'과 더불어 영국의 지명 앞에 붙는 접두어로 매우 일반적이다. 그 사례로는 Cotswold villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter, Hampshire villages of Over and Nether Wallop가 있다. 단어 ‘much’가 영어 고어 'mickle'에서 유래되었는데 이제는 거의 전부 이 much가 대체하여 사용되고 있다. ‘much’ 역시 Much Wenlock, Shropshire와 같이 지명에 사용되기도 한다. 물론 Little Wenlock도 그렇고.
속담으로서 'many a little makes a mickle'는 18세기 'look after the pennies (원래는 'take care of the pence'), and the pounds will look after ('take care of') themselves'이란 표현을 지금에 와서는 광범위하게 대체하여 사용되는 관용구가 되었다.
확실히 더 오래된 속담 내용이 1614년 William Camden의 다소 두서없는 제목의 작품인 Remaines of a greater worke concerning Britaine, 1605에 다음과 같이 언급되어 있다.
"Many a little makes a micle."
그리고 다음 세기에 George Washington이 1793년 자신의 Writings에 아래와 같이 기록함으로써 대서양을 넘게 되었다
"A Scotch [steady on George, I think they prefer to be called Scots] addage, than which nothing in nature is more true 'that many mickles make a muckle'."
이 속담의 변형 형태인 'many a mickle makes a muckle' 역시 때때로 들리는데 이것은 mickle과 muckle이 각각 ‘작은’과 ‘커다란’이란 뜻으로 잘못 이해한 것에서 유래된 말도 안되는 20세기 버전으로 이해하면 된다.
