유래:
'The dumps'는 장소가 아니라 dejection(낙담); melancholy(우울); depression(암울)을 뜻하는 아주 흔한 중세 표현이다. 가장 최초의 기록은 1529년 Henry More의 A dialoge of comforte against tribulation에서로 다음과 같다.
What heapes of heauynesse, hathe of late fallen amonge vs alreadye, with whiche some of our poore familye bee fallen into suche dumpes.
‘Dumps’는 16세기 이후 연극과 원고에서 자주 사용되었는데 셰익스피어도 1596년 The Taming of the Shrew에서 다음과 같이 사용한 것을 포함 몇 번 쓰기도 했다.
Why, how now, daughter Katharina! in your dumps?
'in the dumps'는 우울하고 의기소침한 상태로 나중에 Winston Churchill 경이 'black dog(우울증, 낙담)'이라고 불렀던 것과 같다. 'down in the dumps'에 대한 최초 기록은 1785년 Francis Grose의 매우 가치있는 사전 The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue에서로 다음과 같다.
DUMPS. Down in the dumps; low-spirited, melancholy: jocularly said to be derived from Dumpos, a king of Egypt, who died of melancholy.
Grose는 이집트 왕족에 대한 터무니없는 이 개념을 18세기 초 영국 시인 John Gay의 작품에서 가져온 것으로 보인다. John Gay가 쓴 시 Wednesday; or, the Dumps는 제목 속에 다음과 같은 주석과 함께 인쇄되었다.
So Mopes after the same manner is thought to have come from Merops, another Egyptian King who dy'd of the same distemper; but our English Antiquaries have conjectured that Dumps, which is, a grievous heaviness of spirits, comes from the word Dumplin, the heaviest kind of pudding that is eaten in this country, much used in Norfolk, and other counties of England.
주석: Dumps 혹은 Dumbs는 ‘Sullens(시무룩한) 감정을 표현하기 위해 사용한다. 일부 사람들은 피라미드를 세우고 우울증으로 사망한 이집트 왕 Dumops에서 유래된 것으로 주장해왔다. Mopes가 Distemper(개와 고양이가 잘 걸리는 전염병)로 사망한 또 다른 이집트 왕 Merops에서 유래 되었다는 같은 방식이지만 영국의 골동품상들은 영혼이 가진 통탄할 괴로움인 Dumps는 영국, 특히 Norfolk와 다른 영국령 나라에서 주로 먹는 가장 무거운 푸딩 종류인 Dumplin에서 유래된 것으로 추측한다.
언제 이 주석이 누구에 의해 추가되었는지는 명확하지 않고 Grose의 사전 보다 훨씬 이후에 추가된 것으로 보인다. 어느 쪽이든 'the dumps'가 Dumpos 혹은 Dumops에서 유래되지 않았고 역시 mope도 Merops에서 유래된 것도 아니기 때문에 중요하지 않다.
'dumps'가 'dumplin'에서 유래되었다는 다른 주장 역시 그럴싸한 주석도 처음 보면 적어도 그럴 듯하다. Dumplins은 확실히 요리 감각적이 측면에서 보면 무거운 것이 들어있는 것으로 들린다. 옥스포드 사전에는 이것에 대해 ‘반죽덩어리와 도우가 포함된 약간 공모양의 형태를 가진 그대로거나 끓인 푸딩 종류’라고 정의하고 있지만 이것 역시 dumps의 기원은 아니다.
