유래:
'In the same boat'는 16세기 영국에서 유래되었다. 1584년 Thomas Hudson이 Du Bartas' Historie of Judith를 번역하면서 'in the same boat'를 'having the same fate(같은 운명에 처하)'과 동일시 하는 은유로 다음과 같이 사용하였던 것이다.
Haue ye paine? so likewise paine haue we: For in one bote we both imbarked be.
그 은유가 대중의 상상력을 얻기까지는 한참의 시간이 필요했지만 1629년 성직자였던 Thomas Taylor는 이 표현을 다음과 같이 사용하기도 했다.
and threatned with the tempest, and is someway interessed in the common cause, and quarrell.
이 은유는 확실히 운명을 나누는 같은 배에 함께 있는 사람들은 선택을 하든 하지 않든 한 번 항해를 시작하면 내릴 수 없다는 사실을 말하고 있다.
