군인들이 무기로 'blaze away'를 한다면 여기서 blaze는 불과 연기를 말하는 것이다. 이것은 18세기 후반부터 사용되었는데 그 예는 1776년 Battle of Brooklyn의 다음과 같다.
"We bid them stand and blazed away like brave boys."
오늘날 ‘blaze a trail’에 대한 의미는 누군가 선두에서 다른 사람들을 위해 길을 만드는 것으로 blaze는 태운다는 뜻으로 해석될 수 있게 한다. 다른 언급은 돌아갈 길을 붙태우고 오로지 앞으로만 힘차게 공격하는 사람들에 대한 것이다. 하지만 이 관용구를 만든 사람들의 마음 속에 이런 생각은 없었다. 여기서 blaze는 말대가리에 새겨진 것과 같은 눈금이나 표식이다. 따라서 'to blaze a trail'은 나무에 표식을 하여 뒤에 오는 다른 사람이 따라올 수 있도록 하는 것을 말한다. 나무를 베기 위한 표식도 자주 이런 방식을 활용한다.
나무껍질 조각을 잘게 부셔 길이나 경계를 표식하는 것을 의미하는 것으로 Blaze를 사용한 것은 미국에서 유래되었는데 초기의 사례는 다음과 같다.
-1750년 Dr. Thomas Walker의 Journal of Exploration [of Kentucky]: "I Blazed a way from our House to the River." & "I blazed several trees in the fork and marked T. W. on a Sycamore Tree"
- John J. Henry의 An accurate account of the hardships of that band of heroes who traversed the wilderness in the campaign against Quebec in 1775: "A path tolerably distinct, which we made more so by blazing the trees."
정확히 'blaze a trail'로 실제 쓰인 최초 기록은 1883년 11월 Montana 신문 The Helena Independent로 다음과 같다.
"The merchants thereupon, desirous of securing the trade of the new mines, offered the stranger $100 if he would blaze a trail through, and afterward it could be cleared sufficiently for pack animals to pass along."
