오늘날 'Straight'가 'strait' 보다 더 많이 사용되고 있어 이 관용구와 관련한 가장 흔한 질문은 'strait and narrow'와 'straight and narrow' 중 어떤 스펠링이 맞느냐는 것이다. 이것은 얼마나 규칙에 엄격하기를 바라는가에 달려 있다. 이 표현의 기원은 성경, 특히 마태복음 7:13/14로 King James 버전을 보면 다음과 같이 기록되어 있다.
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

이 구절을 보면 'straight' 보다는 'strait'을 쓰고 있는데 매우 좁아 지나기 어려운 길이나 수로를 뜻하는 strait가 지금은 약간 구식으로 들린다. 여전히 지금도 이 단어는 해협 이름에 사용되고 있는데 예를 들면 Straits of Dover이 그렇다. 이렇게 해협으로 정의된 것은 Admiral Smyth의 Sailor's Word-book 1867년 버전으로 다음과 같다.

이 straight and narrow 버전은 아주 오래되고 'strait and narrow'로 쓰인 가장 최초 사례에도 시기적으로 매우 가까워 자격 측면에서 'strait and narrow'에 필적할 만하다. Strait and narrow의 사례는 1712년 A Vindication of the Government in Scotland: During the Reign of King Charles II으로 다음과 같다.

영어 시험에서 더 높은 점수를 얻고자 한다면 'strait and narrow'로 쓰는 것이 더 나은 선택이겠지만 오늘날은 'Straight and narrow'이 더 일반적인 스펠링이고 이렇게 쓴다고 해서 별문제가 되지는 않으니 걱정할 필요가 없다.
