유래:
이 관용구는 죄인이 신 앞에서 자신이 잘못을 인정하는 가톨릭 미사의 한 부분인 고백의 기도(Confiteor)에서 유래되었다. Confiteor는 'I confess'로 번역된다.
영어로 사용된 것은 매우 오랜 역사를 가지고 있는데 1374년 Chaucer가 그의 Troylus에서 다음과 같이 기록했다.
"Now, mea culpa, lord! I me repente."
이 관용구의 뜻을 강조하기 위해 가끔은 'mea maxima culpa'라고 쓰이는데 그 뜻은 'my most grievous fault'이다. 이것 역시 오랜 역사를 가지고 있는데 1604년 Watson의 Decacordon를 보면 다음과 같은 내용이 나온다.
"Shall lay their hands a little heavier on their hearts with Mea maxima culpa."
고백의 기도(Confiteor)는 라틴어로 'mea culpa'와 'mea maxima culpa' 모두 사용되는데 다음과 같다.

이것을 영어로 해석하면 다음과 같다.

최근에는 일상어에서 ‘mea culpa’는 종교적인 기원의 의미가 덜한 가벼운 의미로 사용된다. 책임을 인정할 때 뜻으로 'whoops, my fault'와 같이 쓰이는 것이다. 따라서 누군가 'mea culpa'라고 인정한다면 비난을 회피하기 위한 것으로 쓰인다고 볼 수 있어 누군가가 그렇게 중요하지 않은 잘못에 대해 그 책임을 인정했다면 그 잘못을 지적하는 것은 좋지 않다고 해석할 수 있다고 하겠다.
