유래:
1850년대 이후로 'mull'은 미국에서 ‘행동 없이 문제가 해결되도록 놔두다; 그대로 내버려 두다’란 의미로 사용되기 시작했다. 'mull over'는 이런 사용법의 확장으로 최초 기록은 1874년 2월 The Atlantic Monthly에 실린 다음과 같은 내용이다.
The stage proprietor, the stage driver, and the hostler, mull over the problem, and sit down on the woman's hair-trunk in front of the tavern to reason with her.

“mull’에 대한 새로운 의미는 이전의 이와 같은 내용들과 별개로 만들어진 것으로 보인다. 그럼에도 'mull over'는 위에 언급된 의미들의 마지막 것을 언급하여 누군가의 마음 속에서 생각되고 있는 무엇을 말하고 있다는 것이 보다 그럴듯하다.
