유래:
take umbrage 이외에 umbrage를 사용하는 것 같지도 않고 다른 맥락에서도 더 이상 사용되지 않고 있다. 그런데 umbrage가 도대체 무엇인가? 몇 가지 맛이 역겨운 특허약품으로 들리기도 한다.
15세기로 돌아가보면 umbrage는 지금과 달리 불쾌감을 나타내는 단어가 아니었다. ‘그늘’을 뜻하는 라틴어 ‘umbra’에서 영어로 유래되어 영어에서도 그늘, 그림자 혹은 그림자를 만드는 나뭇잎을 말하는 것이었다. 그 사용예는 1426년 John Lydgate가 De Guileville의 Pilgrimage of the life of man을 번역한 일부에 포함되어 있다.

‘taking umbrage’는 그늘진 나무 아래에 앉은 것으로 부정적인 연상이 포함되지 않았었는데 1540년 Thomas Elyot 경의 The image of gouernance을 보면 명확하게 알 수 있다.
The sayd trees gaue a commodyous and plesant vmbrage.
그러나 시간이 지나면서 umbrage가 불쾌하다는 의미로 비유적으로 사용되었는데 아마도 어두움을 음울한 생각으로 단순히 연상하게 된 결과로 보인다. 이러한 의미로 사용된 것에서 umbrage는 처음에는 taken보다는 given과 같이 사용되었다. 그 예로는 1620년 Nathaniel Brent 경이 번역한 Historie of the council of Trent이다.

그늘/불쾌함의 은유는 1635년 Robert Naunton의 Fragmenta regalia에서 더 명확해진다.

‘taking umbrage’의 최초의 기록은 1680년 Lord Fountainhall의 The decisions of the Lords of Council and Session이다.
The Bishop... took umbrage at his freedom of speech in the pulpit anent [side by side with] the government.
J.K. Rowling이 Harry Potter 시리즈에 등장시킨 기분나쁜 교수 캐릭터인 Umbridge의 이름은 이러한 연상에서 따온 것이다. 거기에 더해 첫 이름을 라틴어에서 고통을 뜻하는 dolour에서 따와 Dolores로 붙임으로서 부정적인 연계를 강화하였다.
