유래:
왜 조개들이 행복할까? 입을 벌린 조개들을 보면 웃고 있는 모습을 갖고 있는 것에서 나온 것으로 추측된다는 설이 있다. 하지만 이 관용구는 지금은 잘 쓰이지 않지만 원래의 풀 버전인 'as happy as a clam at high water'에서 더 유래된 것으로 보인다. 밀물이 들어오면 조개들은 그들을 잡아 먹는 다른 생물체로부터 자유로워지기 때문에 이 때가 쌍각연체동물 세계에서는 가장 행복한 시기가 될 것이다. 이 관용구는 미국 동북부에서 19세기에 유래되었는데 최초의 인용은 1833년 The Harpe's Head - A Legend of Kentucky이다.
"It never occurred to him to be discontented... He was as happy as a clam."
‘high water’가 포함된 버전의 최초의 기록은 1844년 8월 Pennsylvania 신문인 The Adams Sentinel로 다음과 같은 기록이다.
"Crispin was soon hammering and whistling away as happy as a clam at high water."
이 표현은 1840년대 후반 미국에서 매우 널리 알려졌는데 1848년 John Russell Bartlett의 Dictionary Of Americanisms - A Glossary of Words And Phrases Usually Regarded As Peculiar To The United States에 다음과 같이 포함되어 있다.
"As happy as a clam at high water," is a very common expression in those parts of the coast of New England where clams are found.
또한 1848년 Virginia의 Richmond로부터 Southern Literary Messenger는 이 관용구가 모든 사람들에게 친숙하다는 의견을 내놓기도 했다.
