유래:
‘pecker’는 미국 속어로 남자의 성기인 penis를 일컫는 말로 이 표현도 미국 속어와 연상된다고 할 수 있지만 영국의 pecker는 미국 속어와 달리 코 혹은 입을 뜻한다. 이 관용구는 ‘keep your chin up’에 해당하는 의미이다.
이 관용구에서 ‘pecker’는 초기 사용 시에는 코를 의미하는 것으로 알려졌지만 대체적으로 지금은 입이라고 생각된다. 그 이미지는 음식을 쪼는 새의 부리에서 나온 것이다. 최초의 인용은 1845년 9월 The Times로 다음과 같이 기록되어 있다.
"Mr. King... misstated the fact in saying that he had put a piece of lighted paper to the master's nose while asleep in that house; it was his hot pipe that he applied to the sleeper's nostrils, at the same time crying: Come, old chap, keep your pecker up."
