유래:
지금은 'Run amok'이 'go crazy(미쳐 날뛰다)'와 같은 의미지만 원래는 구체적인 뜻을 가지고 있었다. 이 관용구는 'a murderous frenzy or rage(사람을 죽일 만큼 광분하는)'이란 뜻으로 'amok'(amuk, amuck 혹은 amuco 등 다양하게 쓰이는)이란 단어를 사용하고 있는 동남아시아가 그 기원이다. 이것은 Jav와 Malaysia의 지역 권력 암투에 고용된 ‘죽음 아니면 영광’이라는 용사들을 일컫던 ‘Amuco’들의 마음상태에서 유래된 것이다. 그들은 임무가 실패하면 치욕을 당하거나 죽음으로 징벌 받았기 때문에 전장에서 전사하는 것이 신들의 총애를 받는다고 믿었었다. Amuco 전사들은 잃을 것도 없어 그들의 공격성은 매우 광분하던 성격이 강했다. 이런 내용은 1516년 책 Barbosa에 실렸는데 이것을 1866년 Stanley가 다음과 같이 번역하면서 알려졌다.
"There are some of them [the Javanese] who go out into the streets, and kill as many persons as they meet. These are called Amuco."
James Cook 선장은 1772년 그의 여행서의 세계 판에서 이 관용구인 'run amok'을 다음과 같이 명확하게 정의 하였다.
"To run amock is to get drunk with opium... to sally forth from the house, kill the person or persons supposed to have injured the Amock, and any other person that attempts to impede his passage."
